¿Es Posible Crear Gráficos Estadísticos Accesibles con Microsoft Excel?

Resumen

Los gráficos estadísticos son clave para la alfabetización en datos y esenciales en el proceso de comunicación de conceptos científicos abstractos y relaciones difíciles de entender a través de otras representaciones. Este tipo de visualizaciones puede presentar numerosos desafíos para los usuarios con baja visión, un grupo a menudo pasado por alto a pesar de su enorme prevalencia. Metodología: se evalúa a) el cumplimiento de Microsoft Excel como herramienta de autor con las pautas ATAG 2.0; y b) la accesibilidad de los gráficos generados por MS Excel con un conjunto de principios heurísticos. Para la evaluación heurística, además del gráfico original creado con MS Excel (XLSX), se crearon tres versiones exportadas (DOCX, HTML y SVG) del mismo gráfico utilizando todas las funciones de accesibilidad disponibles en el software. Resultados: en cuanto al cumplimiento de las ATAG, se identificaron 48 características de accesibilidad deseadas aplicables a MS Excel, de las cuales el software cumple con solo 26 de ellas (54,17%). Respecto a la evaluación heurística, las cuatro versiones del gráfico presentan un porcentaje de cumplimiento con los heurísticos igual o superior al 66,66%. Las versiones que obtuvieron las mejores puntuaciones son el gráfico original en formato MS Excel y el exportado a MS Word con un 72,2% de indicadores alcanzados, seguidos por los gráficos exportados en formato SVG y HTML, ambos con un 66,66%. A pesar de que MS Excel no cumple con buena parte de los criterios contemplados en las ATAG 2.0, ha sido posible crear gráficos con un buen nivel de accesibilidad siguiendo los principios heurísticos sugeridos.
